It has been twenty years since being regularly corrected on this sort of thing in my German classes up in Van Hise, so I could not recall the rule. Glad to see someone else spotted the error.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33159158.post-8895043827376043402008-11-09T07:52:00.000-06:002008-11-09T07:52:00.000-06:00Right, it's got to be 'im'. This Rathskeller is really from the time when that spelling was common, so that's no big deal.

But the bigger point is probably that the only way to get a nominative form there is for 'Der Rathskeller' to be an English phrase, not German.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33159158.post-86278734806593007032008-11-08T15:17:00.000-06:002008-11-08T15:17:00.000-06:00You correctly surmised that the sign should read "...You correctly surmised that the sign should read "Willkommen im Rat(h)skeller". I can think of no example of a nominative article being uninflected in a standing phrase. I won't comment on the extra h. Any restaurant with a banner like that would use an obsolete spelling.

It's fascinating how German phrases translate into English. The objective is usually to add a sense of authenticity, and to me, as a German, it never works. If you read "The Good German" by Joseph Kanon for example, you'll find about five different systems for converting the name of a place, and none of them conforms to a map.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
