Sweet Dreams

Mr. Verb, while you were peacefully slumbering (if you ever actually sleep), Aasif Mandvi - you know, that cute reporter on the Jon (no 'h') Stewart show - he said that if we wouldn't have left Vietnam, Prez Bush might have gone on to get a PhD in Linguistics to keep his deferment. Linguistics! Worth watching the rerun tomorrow, dude.

Sweet dreams? Bush with a Ph.D. in Linguistics? That's an utter nightmare!

Besides, what kind of linguistics would he do? He was a history major, but it's hard to imagine him mastering Indo-European or Semitic historical. He's no lab rat, so phonetics and pyscholing are out. Formal systems are pretty definitely not his cup of tea, so forget all those fields. He doesn't rely on empirical evidence, so socio is out. Come to think of it, what IS he actually qualified to do in life?

Mr. Verb does not sleep, he hangs upside down like a bat for a few hours a night.

What's he qualified to do? Run for public office. He's not competent to BE in public office, certainly, but getting elected and doing the job require two entirely different skill-sets. Don't you love democracy?

"W" would specialize in semantics and maybe dabble a bit in derivational morphology.....

Lexical semantics, I trust?
