Quip of the day, on language shift

Just had this passed along, from Jack Thiessen, author of the remarkable Mennonite Low German Dictionary and a leading creative writer in that language:
… languages follow the coin and not the flag.
Nicely put. And while we're on the topic, here's a valuable topic for a facebook group:

If I was on Facebook, I'd join it.

It drives me crazy the number of people who think English is a fragile hothouse plant. It's Johnson grass, people! It's in no danger.
