I guess it had to be said, and said in the media. H.T. by way of j. to R.C.
Deal with it.
Revel in it.

Linguicists, surely?
Oh, that looks even worse to my eye, but then I'm bad speller!
Well, hey, why not, on the model of other -ist/-icist distinctions?
Islamist: someone who engages in Islamism (political Islam)
Islamicist: someone who studies Islam
pragmatist: someone who engages in pragmatism
pragmaticist: someone who studies pragmatics
classist: someone who engages in classism (class-based discrimination)
classicist: someone who studies the classics
This way we can leave linguist to the polyglots and interpreters (engagers in linguism?).
On second thought, then it would have to be linguisticist. And Tensor's already covered that ground.
