Luanne von Schneidemesser starts her fine chapter of Wisconsin Talk (the chapter is called 'Words used in Wisconsin') with a story of her daughter finding out, in the Pacific Northwest, that people didn't get the use of the word bakery to mean 'baked goods' rather than the place those goods are made. This is one of those terms that walks around in the open with no hint of stigma and sometimes surprisingly little awareness that it's a regional form.
