Yawn: National Grammar Day

From the Dead Horse Beating Department, we're informed that it's National Grammar Day. CNN radio reports that the founder, Martha Brockenbrough, says that using text abbreviations like lol outside of texting is "like wearing a speedo on the sidewalk."

She says that people don't understand grammar because it's "poorly explained". Not really. More because 'grammar' in her sense is mostly arbitrary junk.

Sigh.

Their winner in the Worst Grammar in the United States category is a carved stone monument in a cemetery with the word MEMORY misspelled (or so it is claimed; the rather sloppily done photoshop correction makes it unclear what it is that was corrected). This despite the fact that one of the runners-up contains some real grammatical errors. Nuff said.

Sigh. I do wish they'd confine themselves to grammar, instead of spelling and vocabulary. But then they wouldn't get to be so prissy about it all, would they?
